What Is Leupold Optics?
Leupold Optics, or Leupold & Stevens, Inc., is a well-established, renowned manufacturer of a variety of optic equipment.
The company has been in business for more than 100 years. It was founded in 1907 in Germany, and to this day is still owned and operated by the same family (five generations later).
It began as a company which repaired surveying equipment and slowly branched out into manufacturing rifle scopes after its founder, Markus Leupold missed a deer on a hunting trip and swore he could build a better scope.
Today, Leupold is headquartered out of Beaverton, OR, where it employs upwards of 700 workers.
What Does “Synergy Built” Mean?
One thing you will see on almost all of Leupold’s binoculars is the tag “Synergy Built.” This is not some standard stamp or certification you find on optic equipment, so what does it mean?
The notion here is that Leupold uses a team of highly skilled technicians in the development of their products. What’s different about Leupold is that they employ technicians from a range of experts; like mechanical engineers, optical engineers, design and quality testing engineers, etc.
“Synergy” means that these different departments all work together in the development and testing of Leupold products. They are not isolated departments which never meet and just send each other memos.
The “Synergy Built” sticker means that these products are the combined efforts of dozens of experts working diligently together to make the finest products possible.
The Leupold Binocular Review
Leupold makes many varieties of binoculars in a wide range of magnification and objective lens sizes. Our overviews and reviews will look at the main features of some of their best binoculars.
BX-3 Mojave Binoculars
The BX-3 are premium level products offered by Leupold. The Mojave series use special ED (or “extra-low dispersion”) glass for unparalleled, HD image clarity. You’ll never miss a thing with these exceptional, fully multicoated lenses.
The BX-3 Mojave are lightweight given the exceptional precision lenses and rugged body. Depending on the model, these binoculars will weigh as little as 17 ounces. And with the added prism roof technology models, they will weigh only 23 to 28 ounces. These prism roof, cold mirror lenses add an even greater layer of superior image and light transmission for those people who want the absolute best out of their binoculars.
The BX-3 Mojave has an open-bridge design which removes some of the material from the center of the binoculars to make them easier to adjust and focus. This special design makes them highly ergonomic and easy to use. They will fit perfectly into your fingertips and the rubber casing will give you a sure grip every time.
The Leupold BX-3 Mojave are known for their ability to pick up wide vistas because of their exceptional field of view. With the 8×42 model, you’ll be able to pick up around 370 yards across at 1,000 yards. This is a great option for those traveling or those looking for a quality pair of binoculars for taking in mountains and other scenery.
Fully waterproof, the MX-3 Mojave binocular is for that person who only wants the best for their hunting, bird watch, or other outdoor adventure.
Leupold BX-2 Cascades
The BX-2 models are mid-level products that are slightly more affordable that the BX-3, but still offer some amazing features.
The BX-2 Cascades are an excellent choice for hunters because of their lightweight (around 22 to 23 ounces) bodies, textured rubber grip, and superior light transmission. The body of the BX-2 Cascade is made from aluminum which means even though they are lightweight they are completely durable and dependable. The rubber outer coating makes them excellent to handle, even in wet conditions (and they are fully waterproof).
They come with fully multicoated lenses and phase coated BAK 4 prisms for excellent sharpness, color fidelity, and contrast. You’ll be sure to see even the dimmest signs of that big game hiding in the field or forest. These lenses make for great use when in low-light conditions like early morning and at dusk when animals can often be most active.
The BX-2 Cascades are a great option for the all-around hunter who wants quality binoculars at an affordable price.
Leupold BX-2 Acadia
The BX-2 Acadia is another great mid-level pair of binoculars. The Acadia are named after the Acadia National Park which was the first national park east of the Mississippi.
The Acadia keeps all the great features of Cascades but with prism roof and dielectrically coated prisms. These prisms improve the reflection of light transmitted through the binoculars to your eyes all across the light spectrum. This allows for vivid colors and sharp images.
They come in more options than the Cascades to give you greater customization. The BX-2 Acadia range from 8x to 12x magnification and come in both full-size (around 28 ounces and 6.5 inches long) and compact size (around 18 ounces and 4.5 inches long).
These models also have an excellent field of view, are nitrogen filled to prevent fogging, and are completely waterproof.
The BX-2 Acadia are a great all-around option for the hunter and sight-seer.
BX-1 Leupold Yosemite
The “BX-1” label indicates Leupold’s entry level or most affordable line of products. The Yosemite binoculars are designed with younger people in mind. The other lines of binoculars are often too big for children to use effectively. The BX-1 Yosemite is perfect for that young hunter, traveler, or adventurer.
They weigh only 17 ounces and are anywhere from 4.5 to 4.6 inches long, depending on the model. Their eye relief is comfortable enough for use with eyeglasses, and their lenses are fully multicoated for superior light transmission and clear images. These coating will also help protect the lenses from being scratched or gathering dust and other particles.
They are fully waterproof so you do not have to worry about the binoculars being damaged should you get caught in the rain. This keeps them totally protected during any adventurous day!
Because of their compact size, they are great for just looking around the backyard, taking with you on day trips, or even using while on vacation. Everyone in your family will be able to enjoy these small, compact binoculars.
